Enchanting local culture, self-discovery, & natural wonder await in a tiny town made of pure magic

Does any of this sound familiar to you?

We recognize that people arrive here from very different places — finishing something enormous, starting over, or grieving someone they've lost. And still, so many of them describe the same quiet cycle: a rush of pride or clarity, a flash of feeling capable again, before it's pulled back under by everything waiting to be done.

This is why a Moratorium Retreat is a journey of renewal like no other

Situated in the remote, rugged wilderness on the northeastern edge of North America, Moratorium sits in the small fishing community of Conche — and for the length of your stay, you're the only guest here. Not the only guest at the property. The only guest in town.

We take care of everything. You just show up. Every meal, every excursion, every detail is arranged before you arrive, led by a team of local guides who know this coastline, its history, and each other. There's nothing to plan and nothing to coordinate — just a place few outsiders ever see, entirely yours for a few days.

As the only tourism operator in Conche, we're able to offer something most retreats can't: total exclusivity, in a place still untouched by tourism itself. What's left is quiet, and a version of rest that doesn't ask anything of you.

HOW IT WORKS

Start with our online booking form. Our team follows up with a real conversation — we want to know you, and make sure this is genuinely the right fit.

From there, you'll work with our Guest Services Manager to shape your stay — a core set of experiences, built around your pace and interests.

When you arrive, you're paired with Conche's own guides and hosts. Most guests leave with more than a good trip — they leave with real friendships, and a place that stays with them.

  • Stories From Those Who Came Before You

The trip definitely changed me. I was drawn to Moratorium Retreats after the death of my husband. I wanted a place to unplug, meditate, read, walk, and be in nature.

I spent 3 nights in the Chaytor’s cabin and it was exactly what I needed. The only sounds were the wind, the birds, and the water. I spent the last 2 nights in Conche. I got a tour of the town and the remains of a WW2 bomber that crashed landed in 1942 from Austin. Joan gave me an incredible tour of the +200 foot tapestry and gave me an embroidery lesson.

Conche is a small town, you won’t find high end restaurants and boutiques, but you will find beauty and genuine people.

Women from Conche prepared my food and it was amazing. The highlights for me were the partridgeberry crumble, the soups, the cod and scallops.

This part of the world is special, if you’re looking to unplug in nature, get in touch with Toni.  Newfoundland’s rugged beauty has a way of reminding you what really matters."

  • Stories From Those Who Came Before You

Toni is a visionary. I felt it when she talked about mind, body, and spirit. I was truly impressed with the experience. I felt a great sense of hope that someone so young had a calling to come back to her community, reconnect, and look at the opportunity of making something great out of something negative.

You must look globally at the tourists you want to bring to your community. Toni did that through her travels and lived experiences.”

“A truly wonderful trip was spent exploring the history of Conche, the people and the life experiences growing up there.

Nestled in a part of our world that has an inspiring rugged beauty about it, at days end you felt liked you belonged there. Toni has a genuine love of the place see grew up and shaped her. A wicked good time was had.”

  • Stories From Those Who Came Before You

“Toni has created something so special. I was familiar with the moratorium, but having a familiarity from reading about it is one thing; immersing yourself in the culture with the people who lived it is something entirely different.

The hiking, talking to people, and learning through their eyes what happened and how it affected them was amazing. The experience is an indication of a small outport, coming together with their stories, teaching, learning, and creating something really special.”

Your place to reset

Five nights, two stays — each a distinct space to slow down and take it all in.

THE CABIN - NIGHTS 1 & 2

Get off-the-grid and out of your head in Northeast Crouse, a community that was resettled in the 1960’s. This cabin is your home for the first few nights (2+) of your stay to get grounded and acclimated to the land and quiet around you.

At the Cabin, enjoy the crackling sounds of the wood stove and the privacy of 90-acres of land to explore. The cabin is powered by solar, with a propane cookery, BBQ, and full bathroom with shower and hot water.

The Cabin is exclusively for solitude, and guides are available to book for outings should you wish, however we feel that you’ll take this time to clear the mind, breathe, and soak in the total solitude.

THE LOFT - NIGHTS 3, 4, 5

Built in 2021, the Loft sits above Crouse Harbour in Conche. With striking views of the ocean, high-ceilings, and quirky outport charm, the Old Mill Loft is a tranquil refuge from vibrant days exploring Conche.

You’ll spend the remainder of your stay (3 nights) here, with an unobstructed view of Northeast Crouse and a sunrise over the ocean each morning. Hear the sounds of birds chirping from the woods below and the fragrant smells from the garden below the entrance.

Fully equipped with a kitchenette, full bathroom, and open concept with a queen sized bed. Desk space and drawing space can be requested to turn this space into your personal studio.

Get cosy and kick back — this is your space to reflect after each day and to clear the mind.

There are no strangers in Conche, and when you leave, it will feel as if you are leaving home.

You'll go forth rested — not the kind that fades by Monday, but the kind that stays with you. And you'll carry a little of this place, and these people, into whatever comes next.
